Irish Employment Monitor - August 2010

Irish professional job vacancies increase 46% compared to August 09

The Premier Group Irish Employment Monitor will change its name next month to the “Morgan McKinley Irish Employment Monitor” as Premier, Verkom and Brunel, the specialist recruitment divisions within Premier Group, will trade in Ireland as Morgan McKinley from October 6th

Highlights

  • August 10 saw the number of new professional jobs coming to the market in Ireland increase by 46% compared to August 09
  • When compared to July 10, new job vacancies held steady  with a 0.3% rise recorded in August 10
  • The number of professionals entering the jobs market looking for new career opportunities in August 10 increased by 54% compared to the same month last year
  • Month-on-month the number of professionals commencing their job search fell by 9% in August 10 versus July 10.

New job opportunities for professionals in Ireland rose 46% from 3,626 in August 09 to 5,300 in August 10.  Month-on-month however, new job figures held steady with a minimal increase on the July 10 figure of 5,283, according to the Premier Group Irish Employment Monitor.

The number of professionals looking for new employment opportunities compared to the previous year increased by 54% from 7,180 in August 09 to 11,070 in August 10. This was in contrast to the month-on-month reduction over the summer holiday period with a fall of 9% from 12,145 in July 10.

Premier Group is investing in Ireland and will be rebranding three of its leading recruitment businesses; Premier, Verkom and Brunel to Morgan McKinley from 6th October 2010.  This will make Ireland consistent with the eight other countries in which Premier Group trades as Morgan McKinley. The Premier Group Irish Employment Monitor will be renamed the Morgan McKinley Irish Employment Monitor from October.

Brian Murphy, CEO of Premier Group Ireland, commented:
“The latest figures are encouraging because they show a continuing level of stabilisation in the professional jobs market from month to month and more significantly, the year on year rise of 46% in professional job vacancies  is a significant improvement and indicates that the professional employment market is in a healthier position than it was in this time last year. While we are a long way from the record levels of new jobs seen during 2007, there is room for cautious optimism that steady progress is now being achieved.

““The number of professionals looking for new career opportunities in August 10 compared to August 09 followed a similar pattern to the job vacancy increases, with a rise of 54% as candidates have more confidence in the professional jobs market compared to a year ago. While  there was a dip of 9% in new candidates in August 10 compared to July 10, this is most likely due to the August holiday period.  The Premier Group Irish Employment Monitor has consistently shown an increase in the number of professionals entering the market throughout 2010 compared to 2009 levels, and we expect this trend to continue during the autumn months.

“While the ecomomic conditions facing Ireland remain very challenging including the size of the  exchequer deficit, continuing uncertainty in our Financial Systems and high unemployment   we are hopeful that we will see a continuing slow but steady recovery in the Irish professional jobs market, although it is important to remember that this improvement is coming off a particularly low base experienced last year.

“As Ireland’s leading professional recruiter, we are pleased to announce that from 6th October 2010, Premier, Verkom and Brunel, three of the specialist recruitment divisions within Premier Group, will rebrand to Morgan McKinley.  We already trade as Morgan McKinley in eight other countries and now we will do the same here at home. We are the same people, the same Irish company, delivering the same excellent service.

The improvement in the professional jobs market experienced thus far in 2010 gives us the confidence to invest in this rebrand and consolidate our position as leaders in the Irish recruitment market.”

“The Premier Group Irish Employment Monitor will change its name to the Morgan McKinley Irish Employment Monitor from October.”
